Foods You Have to Try in Liguria, Italy

If there’s one thing I learned in Italy it’s that each region in Italy is known for a specific type of food, or in most cases, foods, and if you eat any of these foods outside that region it will definitely not taste the same. I was fortunate enough to have spent 3 months in the region of Liguria, so if you’re planning on visiting this region any time soon be sure to try some of these!

Pesto alla genovese- Not a pesto fan? Trust me, that will definitely change after one bite of this. I, myself, wasn’t a huge fan either prior to moving to the Liguria region, but now things have changed for me in that perspective. The reason the pesto here has such a unique flavor is because of the climate and soil in the region. This is a very common dish in Liguria so you won’t have any trouble at all finding it.

Focaccia- One food that is never in short supply in Italy is bread, but focaccia isn’t just any type of bread. Imagine you’re eating your favorite type of breadstick, but in flatbread form. This type of bread is seasoned with herbs and olive oil. There are different flavors of focaccia, but I like to keep it simple and would recommend trying focaccia semplice during your visit, but don’t be afraid to branch out either! Focaccia is considered a street food and you can buy it at a focacceria or a panetteria(that means bakery for all my non-Italian speaking friends).

Farinata- Farinata looks a bit like a pancake however it does not taste like one, hopefully that doesn’t disappoint you. Farinata is made from a chickpea flour and is quite simple and made with only a few ingredients and is best to eat while hot. Another variation of farinata is called farinata bianca, which is popular in the city I lived in, Savona, Italy. Instead of chickpea flour, wheat flour is used giving it a whiter and smoother appearance.
